Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect

Reporting suspected child abuse can help stop abuse, get a family the assistance they need, and even save a life.

You need to have only a reasonable suspicion of child abuse. You do not have to prove it or be absolutely certain. If you make a report in good faith, you are immune from civil or criminal liability. Frequently asked qustions about recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect.

Where to report

If you suspect abuse or neglect, call the New York State Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment: 1-800-342-3720. They will notify the local Child Protective Services, which is part of the county Department of Social Services. CPS will investigate and act to protect the child and to help the parent(s).
